EPFO members looking to generate or activate their Universal Account Number should be aware that the process has changed.
Under the current EPFO UAN rules 2026, UAN generation and activation are handled through the UMANG app using Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) for the general member process. The older direct UAN allotment and activation facilities on the EPFO Member Portal have been discontinued.
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation introduced the face-authentication system to make UAN generation more accurate, reduce dependence on employers and allow workers to access EPFO services more quickly.
The system uses information retrieved from Aadhaar and biometric face authentication to verify the member's identity.
Here's how the current process works, what employees need before starting, and what to do if UAN activation fails.
EPFO UAN Rules 2026: What Has Changed?
Previously, employers played a major role in generating UANs for employees, while activation was completed separately by the member.
EPFO said this process sometimes resulted in incorrect personal information, including errors involving mobile numbers and dates of birth. In some cases, workers were not even informed of their UAN.
EPFO introduced Aadhaar Face Authentication-based UAN generation and activation through UMANG in April 2025.
It subsequently made this route mandatory for general UAN allotment/generation from August 1, 2025. The employer-based generation process continues for specified exceptional categories, including International Workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.
The current EPFO Member Portal confirms that direct UAN allotment through the portal has been discontinued and directs users to UMANG. It separately states that portal-based UAN activation has also been discontinued.
UAN Activation 2026
What is a UAN and why is it important?
UAN stands for Universal Account Number.
It acts as an identifier for an EPFO member and helps connect the member's provident fund records across employment.
Instead of treating every change of employer as a completely separate PF relationship, the UAN provides a common identity around which EPFO member services can operate.
Once the UAN is activated and relevant requirements are completed, members can access services such as their PF passbook, KYC-related facilities and online claims. EPFO specifically says the face-authentication process provides immediate access to services including passbook viewing, KYC updates and claim submission.
Can you activate UAN on the EPFO Member Portal in 2026?
For the current activation process, no.
The EPFO Member Portal currently carries an explicit notice saying:
It directs members to activate their UAN through Aadhaar-based Face Authentication on the UMANG app instead.
This matters because many older guides available online still describe the previous portal-based activation method.
Anyone following an old tutorial may therefore find that the options no longer match the current EPFO system.
What do you need to activate UAN through UMANG?
The process depends on Aadhaar authentication.
According to EPFO's instructions, users should have:
UMANG app
AadhaarFaceRD app
Aadhaar number
Mobile number linked with Aadhaar
A smartphone capable of completing the face scan
EPFO says the mobile number entered during the process is matched against the mobile number registered with Aadhaar for OTP authentication.
What You Need
How to activate an existing UAN in 2026
If you already have a UAN but it has not been activated, the current process is through UMANG.
Step 1: Download UMANG
Install the official UMANG application.
Step 2: Install AadhaarFaceRD
The Aadhaar Face RD application is required for biometric face authentication.
Step 3: Open EPFO services
Open UMANG and navigate to EPFO.
Look for:
UAN Services Through Face Auth
Then choose:
UAN Activation
The EPFO Member Portal currently directs existing UAN holders to this option.
Step 4: Provide the required information
Follow the instructions displayed by UMANG and complete the Aadhaar-related verification.
Step 5: Complete Face Authentication
The smartphone camera is used to perform the live face scan through UIDAI's authentication system.
EPFO's manual says that if Aadhaar Face RD is not installed, the service provides a route to install it before continuing.
After successful verification, the activation process can be completed.
How to generate a new UAN in 2026
A person who needs a new UAN follows a similar process but selects a different option.
Open:
UMANG → EPFO Services → UAN Services Through Face Auth → UAN Allotment and Activation
EPFO's April 2025 instructions describe the process as entering the Aadhaar number and Aadhaar-linked mobile number, giving consent, validating the OTP and then completing a live face scan.
After successful verification, the UAN is generated and activated.
EPFO says the member can also download an e-UAN card PDF, which can then be provided to the employer during onboarding.
Do employees still need their employer to generate a UAN?
For the standard current process, employees can generate their UAN themselves through UMANG rather than depending entirely on the employer.
This was one of the objectives behind EPFO's introduction of Aadhaar-based Face Authentication.
EPFO says employees can directly generate the UAN, download the e-UAN card and provide the UAN to their employer for onboarding. However, there are exceptions.
EPFO's July 2025 circular says that from August 1, 2025, UAN generation is to be done through Aadhaar FAT on UMANG, while the existing employer-based process continues for exceptional cases such as International Workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan.
Old vs Current UAN Process
Why did EPFO introduce Face Authentication for UAN?
EPFO said the earlier process could produce errors because information was entered during employer-led UAN generation.
The organisation cited problems involving fields such as mobile number and date of birth, which could later create difficulties when members tried to access services or submit claims.
Face Authentication changes that process in several ways.
EPFO says:
Aadhaar and the user are authenticated through Face Authentication;
user data is populated from Aadhaar;
the mobile number is matched with the Aadhaar-registered number;
activation is completed during UAN generation;
and employees can generate their UAN directly.
The intention is to reduce data-entry errors and simplify access to EPFO services.
What can you do after UAN activation?
Activation is important because it unlocks access to several digital EPFO services.
EPFO specifically identifies services including:
PF passbook viewing
KYC updates
Online claim submission
Other EPFO member services
These become available after the UAN generation and activation process is successfully completed.
After UAN Activation
What if Aadhaar and UAN details do not match?
An Aadhaar-UAN mismatch can prevent the Face Authentication process from completing.
EPFO's UMANG user manual lists Aadhaar-UAN mismatch as a possible error and says the process is halted when the mismatch occurs.
Members should therefore check that the relevant Aadhaar and EPFO records are accurate.
EPFO has separately simplified member-profile correction through Aadhaar authentication in many cases, reducing dependence on employers and EPFO offices for some corrections.
Do not create another UAN simply because existing details contain an error. The appropriate correction process should be followed instead.
What if Aadhaar Face Authentication fails?
Face Authentication can fail for technical or validation reasons.
EPFO's user manual identifies possible issues including:
Face Authentication Failure
Invalid UAN/Aadhaar
Aadhaar-UAN mismatch
EPFO validation failure
For a face-authentication failure, EPFO's guidance is to retry or contact support if the problem continues.
Members should also make sure that AadhaarFaceRD is properly installed and that the phone's camera is functioning correctly.
Face Authentication Not Working?
What if you already have an activated UAN?
You do not need to generate another UAN merely because EPFO introduced the Face Authentication system.
EPFO's UMANG documentation includes a separate service called “Face Authentication of Already Activated UANs.”
According to the manual, this service can authenticate an already activated UAN and update EPFO records with verified information obtained through the authentication process.
The service is distinct from generating a completely new UAN.
Is UAN Face Authentication safe?
The process relies on Aadhaar authentication infrastructure rather than asking an employer to manually enter all member identity information.
EPFO says the system provides 100% validation of Aadhaar and the user using Face Authentication, while relevant user information is populated from Aadhaar.
Members should nevertheless use only official channels.
EPFO has warned members against approaching unauthorised agents and says its online services are available through official EPFO platforms.
Do not share OTPs, passwords or other authentication credentials with anyone claiming they can activate a UAN on your behalf.
Does EPFO charge a fee for UAN activation?
Members should not pay an unauthorised intermediary simply to access EPFO's online services.
EPFO has specifically urged members to use its official free and secure online services rather than approaching unauthorised agents.
If someone demands payment to “unlock”, “activate” or “approve” your UAN outside official channels, verify the claim directly with EPFO before proceeding.
Where can members get help?
If the UAN activation or allotment process continues to fail, members can use EPFO's official support channels.
The current EPFO Member Portal lists the EPFO helpdesk number as 14470 for assistance with the UAN process.
EPFO's UMANG manual also advises users experiencing repeated problems to contact UMANG helpdesk support or EPFO customer support.
EPFO UAN Rules 2026: Key Takeaways
The most important change is straightforward: the old direct UAN activation and direct allotment facilities on the EPFO Member Portal are no longer the standard route.
For general users, UAN generation and activation now take place through UMANG using Aadhaar Face Authentication.
New employees can generate and activate their UAN through the UAN Allotment and Activation service, while people who already have an unactivated UAN can use the UAN Activation option.
The system reduces employer dependence, uses Aadhaar data for identity verification and can immediately unlock access to services such as PF passbook viewing, KYC facilities and online claims.
Users should, however, ensure that their Aadhaar information and Aadhaar-linked mobile number are correct before beginning the process.
Sources & Methodology
Updated+ reviewed the current EPFO Member Portal, EPFO's official UMANG Face Authentication user manual, the July 2025 circular making Aadhaar FAT-based UAN allotment mandatory from August 1, 2025, and Ministry of Labour & Employment/PIB releases on UAN generation and activation. Current EPFO material was given priority over older UAN tutorials because the activation process has changed.
