Vivo will launch its X500 series in China on September 21, with the Vivo X500 Pro and X500 Pro Max set to debut MediaTek's new 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro processor. Vivo is putting particular emphasis on photography and video, including advanced ZEISS imaging, 4K 120fps 10-bit Log recording and new AI-assisted imaging capabilities.

Vivo's next flagship smartphone generation is almost here.

The company has confirmed that the Vivo X500 series will be unveiled in China on September 21, 2026, with the lineup including the X500, X500 Pro and flagship X500 Pro Max.

For the two Pro models, the headline upgrade is already confirmed: the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro.

It is MediaTek's new flagship 2nm mobile processor and the X500 Pro series will be the first smartphone family to use it.

But Vivo appears to be making an even bigger pitch around cameras.

Ahead of the launch, the company has been revealing details about its next-generation imaging architecture, professional video features and its continued collaboration with ZEISS.

Here is what has been officially confirmed and what remains to be verified when Vivo launches the phones on September 21.

When will the Vivo X500 Pro Max launch?

Vivo will hold its X500 series launch event in China on September 21 at 7 PM China time.

The lineup comprises three models:

Model

Position

Vivo X500

Standard flagship

Vivo X500 Pro

Premium flagship

Vivo X500 Pro Max

Top-end flagship

The X500 Pro Max is particularly significant because Vivo is introducing it as the highest-end model in this generation rather than relying solely on its previous flagship naming structure.

Vivo has already revealed the Pro Max's exterior design and demonstrated its compatibility with photography accessories, including a professional imaging grip and telephoto extender.

Vivo X500 Pro and Pro Max get the 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro

The biggest confirmed hardware development is MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 Pro.

Vivo says both X500 Pro models will use the processor.

MediaTek manufactures the flagship chip using a 2nm process, putting it among the first generation of smartphone processors built on this advanced fabrication technology.

The CPU uses a 2+3+3 architecture, while the platform supports next-generation LPDDR6 memory and UFS 5.0 storage.

For buyers, however, the more interesting story may be what Vivo and MediaTek have developed together rather than the process node alone.

Vivo says the companies collaborated at the chip level on performance, display and imaging technologies.

Dimensity 9600 Pro puts a major emphasis on AI

Artificial intelligence is another major part of MediaTek's new processor.

The Dimensity 9600 Pro incorporates the NPU 1090 alongside a more efficient secondary NPU designed for always-on workloads.

MediaTek says its architecture is intended to support more sophisticated generative and agentic AI directly on the smartphone.

According to MediaTek, the new NPU delivers 51% faster LLM prefill performance and 55% higher token-generation efficiency per watt compared with its previous flagship generation. These are manufacturer performance claims and real-world results will depend on the phone, software and workload.

This should give Vivo considerably more processing headroom for computational photography and on-device AI.

Cameras are the real focus of the Vivo X500 Pro series

Vivo has made imaging central to the X-series identity, and the X500 generation continues that strategy.

The company has been promoting an upgraded Blueprint Imaging architecture designed to improve both still photography and moving images.

Vivo says the X500 series represents a shift from concentrating primarily on static photography toward more sophisticated cinematic video capture.

The X500 Pro series also continues Vivo's relationship with ZEISS.

For the X500 Pro Max, Vivo has shown a large circular triple-camera module and support for its second-generation telephoto extender.

The accessory extends the effective focal range to approximately 400mm equivalent, according to pre-launch information shared by Vivo executives.

Vivo is promising 4K 120fps 10-bit Log video

Video may be one of the most important upgrades.

Vivo has confirmed professional 4K 120fps 10-bit Log recording on the X500 Pro series.

The company says this is supported at the hardware level through its collaboration with MediaTek.

Vivo is also integrating its proprietary imaging processor with the Dimensity platform to support 4K Dolby Vision portrait video.

These features point toward Vivo targeting not only conventional smartphone photographers but also creators who want greater flexibility when shooting and colour-grading video.

The Dimensity 9600 Pro brings more advanced computational imaging

The processor itself has been designed around a closer relationship between the ISP and AI hardware.

MediaTek calls this its AI Imaging Fusion Architecture.

It allows the image signal processor to work more directly with the NPU for computational photography and video processing.

MediaTek lists capabilities including continuous 60fps subject focus tracking, 17EV HDR video support, semantic processing for 4K60 video and support for up to 4K240 slow-motion capture at the chipset level.

That does not mean every chipset capability will necessarily be available in exactly the same form on every X500 model. Vivo's final camera implementation will determine which modes users actually receive.

What do we know about the Vivo X500 Pro Max specifications?

A combination of official teasers and pre-launch reports is beginning to reveal the broader hardware picture.

Current reports point to the X500 Pro Max using a large 6.85-inch 2K display, while camera information suggests a triple rear-camera configuration headlined by a 200-megapixel telephoto camera.

Reports also indicate a 50-megapixel front camera and a battery around 7,000mAh.

However, these details should remain labelled as pre-launch specifications until Vivo publishes the final product page on September 21.

Vivo X500 Pro Max: What is confirmed vs reported

What about the regular Vivo X500?

The standard X500 is expected to take a slightly different hardware route.

Rather than the Dimensity 9600 Pro used by the two premium models, current information points toward the standard phone using MediaTek's Dimensity 9600M.

MediaTek has confirmed that the 9600M uses a 3nm process, compared with 2nm for the 9600 Pro.

Pre-launch reports have also pointed to a large 7,500mAh battery for the standard X500, although final specifications should be checked at launch.

OriginOS 7 expected across the X500 series

The X500 series is expected to run Vivo's OriginOS 7 in China.

Current reporting indicates that both Pro models will ship with OriginOS 7.

The software is expected to play an important role in Vivo's AI strategy, particularly as the Dimensity 9600 Pro provides considerably greater on-device AI processing capacity.

Global versions, if and when announced, may use a different Vivo software configuration depending on market.

Will the Vivo X500 Pro launch in India?

For Indian buyers, this is the biggest unanswered question.

Vivo has not yet announced an India launch date for the X500 Pro or X500 Pro Max.

The September 21 event is a China launch.

That means Indian pricing circulating before an official announcement should be treated cautiously.

Vivo could subsequently announce international availability, but until the company does so, there is no confirmed India launch date or official Indian price.

For Updated+ readers in India, this is worth watching because Vivo's X-series flagships have increasingly competed on camera technology rather than simply processor performance.

Why the X500 Pro Max matters

The X500 Pro Max arrives during a significant transition in premium Android hardware.

Its 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro places MediaTek directly into the next flagship silicon cycle, while Vivo is using that processing capability heavily around computational photography, professional video and AI.

MediaTek is also making a stronger push into the premium smartphone segment, where it competes with Qualcomm and Apple's in-house silicon. Reuters reported that the company sees advanced AI capabilities as an important part of that strategy.

For Vivo, however, the differentiation is increasingly straightforward: camera first.

The combination of ZEISS optics, computational imaging, a telephoto extender and professional Log video suggests Vivo wants the X500 Pro Max judged as much against dedicated imaging workflows as against other flagship phones.

Updated+ Note

This is a pre-launch article based on information available through September 18, 2026. Confirmed specifications are based on Vivo and MediaTek announcements. Specifications described as reported or expected should be rechecked after Vivo's September 21 launch event.
