EPF Withdrawal Rules 2026: How Much PF Can You Withdraw and When?

EPFO members now have greater flexibility to access their provident fund savings, following a major simplification of the partial withdrawal framework.

Under the revised EPF withdrawal rules 2026, partial withdrawals have been reorganised into three broad categories — Essential Needs, Housing Needs and Special Circumstances — while the minimum service requirement for partial withdrawals has been standardised at 12 months.

The revised framework also allows members to access a larger portion of their eligible provident fund balance while retaining a minimum portion for retirement savings.

But how much PF can you actually withdraw? Can you withdraw the entire balance after losing a job? What are the rules for medical treatment, marriage, education or buying a house?

Here is a detailed guide based primarily on current EPFO and Ministry of Labour and Employment information.

EPF Withdrawal Rules 2026: What Has Changed?

The Central Board of Trustees of EPFO approved a major simplification of provident fund partial withdrawals in October 2025.

The earlier system had 13 separate provisions covering different withdrawal situations. These were consolidated into three broad categories:

Essential Needs — including illness, education and marriage

Housing Needs — housing-related withdrawals

Special Circumstances — situations requiring access to PF savings without the earlier need to specify particular reasons.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment subsequently said members can access 75% of the eligible amount, while 25% is retained as a minimum balance to help preserve retirement savings and the benefit of compounding.

The minimum service requirement for partial withdrawals was also standardised at 12 months.

How Much EPF Can You Withdraw in 2026?

The answer depends on why the money is being withdrawn.

Under the revised partial-withdrawal framework, the government says members can withdraw 75% of the eligible amount, which can include the employee contribution, employer contribution and applicable interest.

The remaining 25% is intended to be maintained as a retirement corpus.

This does not mean every EPFO member can simply withdraw 75% at any time for any reason without satisfying the applicable rules.

The permitted amount and circumstances depend on the type of claim.

EPF Withdrawal Rules 2026 at a Glance

What Are the Three EPF Partial Withdrawal Categories?

One of the biggest changes is simplification.

Instead of requiring members to navigate numerous individual provisions, the revised system groups partial withdrawals into three broad categories.

1. Essential Needs

This category covers important personal requirements such as:

  • illness and medical needs;

  • education; and

  • marriage.

2. Housing Needs

This covers eligible housing-related requirements.

3. Special Circumstances

This category replaces several separate circumstances that previously required members to specify the exact reason for withdrawal.

The Ministry said members applying under Special Circumstances would no longer need to assign a specific reason, reducing claim rejections arising from documentation or classification issues.

How Many Times Can You Withdraw PF for Education?

Under the revised framework, EPFO members can make partial withdrawals for education up to 10 times, subject to the applicable eligibility conditions.

Previously, marriage and education withdrawals were subject to a combined limit of three.

The revised rules significantly expand that flexibility.

How Many Times Can You Withdraw PF for Marriage?

Members can make eligible PF partial withdrawals for marriage up to five times under the revised framework.

This is separate from the increased allowance for education-related withdrawals.

Why Can You Withdraw EPF?

Can You Withdraw PF for Medical Treatment?

Yes. Medical or illness-related needs are included within the Essential Needs category of the revised partial withdrawal framework.

This is important because medical treatment has historically been one of the major circumstances in which EPFO members could access PF savings.

The revised framework is designed to simplify the process and make partial withdrawals less dependent on complicated documentation.

Members should still check the current claim option displayed on EPFO's online claim system before submitting a request.

Can You Withdraw PF While Still Working?

Yes — partial withdrawal does not necessarily require you to leave your job.

Eligible members can take non-refundable PF advances for permitted purposes while remaining employed.

This is different from final PF settlement, which involves closing or settling the provident fund balance after the applicable conditions are met.

That distinction is important:

Partial withdrawal / PF advance→ Member remains within the EPF system.

Final settlement→ Member withdraws the eligible final PF accumulation after exit/retirement or another qualifying circumstance.

EPFO's current claims information identifies Form 31/Composite Claim facilities for PF advances and Form 19 for final PF settlement.

How Much PF Can You Withdraw After Losing Your Job?

Under the revised framework described by the Ministry of Labour, a member who becomes unemployed can withdraw 75% of the PF balance immediately.

This includes the employee contribution, employer contribution and interest.

The remaining 25% can be withdrawn after one year of unemployment, according to the Ministry's explanation of the revised rules.

This represents an important distinction between accessing most of the balance after job loss and completely settling the account.

PF Withdrawal After Job Loss

Can You Withdraw 100% of Your PF?

Yes, but 100% withdrawal is not simply available whenever a member wants to empty the PF account.

The Ministry has said full withdrawal, including the minimum balance otherwise protected under the partial-withdrawal framework, remains possible in qualifying situations including:

  • retirement after the applicable age;

  • permanent disability;

  • incapacity to work;

  • retrenchment;

  • voluntary retirement; and

  • permanently leaving India.

The exact eligibility should be checked against the member's circumstances before a final-settlement claim is made.

What About the 12-Month Rule for Final PF Settlement?

This is one area where readers need particular caution.

In October 2025, EPFO's Central Board of Trustees decided to extend the waiting period for premature final settlement after leaving employment from two months to 12 months. The government said the purpose was to preserve retirement savings while still allowing access to 75% after unemployment.

However, some current EPFO FAQ and claim-information pages continue to display the older two-month rule for final settlement following resignation.

Updated+ Editorial Note

Because official EPFO web pages are not fully synchronised on this point, members should check the current claim eligibility shown in their EPFO Member Portal before relying on a waiting period quoted by a third-party website.

Updated+ will update this guide when EPFO's public-facing claim documentation is fully aligned with the revised framework.

Can You Withdraw PF Before Retirement?

Yes.

Partial withdrawals are specifically designed to provide access to EPF savings before retirement for eligible needs.

Separately, EPFO's published scheme/FAQ material provides for withdrawal of up to 90% of the total PF balance within one year before retirement, subject to the applicable age and scheme conditions.

This should not be confused with routine partial withdrawals for education, marriage, illness or housing.

Is EPF Withdrawal Tax-Free?

Tax treatment depends on the circumstances and length of continuous service.

As a general principle, withdrawing EPF after completing the qualifying continuous-service period can receive different tax treatment from withdrawing it earlier.

For this reason, members considering final withdrawal — particularly after a relatively short period of employment — should check the applicable income-tax provisions before submitting the claim.

This is also why transferring an EPF balance to a new employer can sometimes be preferable to withdrawing it after every job change.

Should You Withdraw PF When Changing Jobs?

Usually, changing jobs does not by itself require withdrawal of the provident fund balance.

EPFO advises members changing employment to transfer their previous PF account to the current establishment rather than treating each job change as an opportunity for final withdrawal.

Keeping the accumulated balance invested can also preserve the long-term compounding benefit of EPF savings.

We will cover this separately in our PF Transfer 2026 guide.

How Do You Apply for EPF Withdrawal Online?

Eligible members can submit claims through EPFO's online member services.

EPFO says online claims can include:

PF Final Settlement — Form 19

Pension Withdrawal Benefit — Form 10C

PF Part Withdrawal/Advance — Form 31

For online claims, the member's UAN and required Aadhaar/bank details need to satisfy EPFO's applicable requirements.

Basic process

Step 1: Access the EPFO Member Portal.

Step 2: Log in using your UAN credentials.

Step 3: Check your member and KYC information.

Step 4: Access the online claim facility.

Step 5: Select the applicable withdrawal/advance claim.

Step 6: Enter the required information.

Step 7: Authenticate and submit the claim.

Members should verify that their bank account details are correct before submitting the claim because approved payments are made electronically.

Which EPFO Claim Do You Need?

How Long Does an EPFO Withdrawal Claim Take?

EPFO's FAQ states that under the EPF Scheme a claim is required to be settled within 20 days.

EPFO's Citizen's Charter sets more ambitious service targets, including seven working days for final PF withdrawal and ordinary part withdrawals, while certain categories have shorter targets.

The Citizen's Charter makes clear that these are aspirational service standards over and above statutory scheme timelines.

Actual processing time can therefore vary depending on the claim and whether there are problems with member records or other information.

Why Can an EPF Withdrawal Claim Be Rejected?

A PF claim can face problems when the information required to process it is incomplete or inconsistent.

Members should particularly check:

  • UAN status;

  • Aadhaar details;

  • bank account and IFSC;

  • date of joining;

  • date of exit, where relevant;

  • personal details in EPFO records; and

  • eligibility for the selected claim.

For online final settlement, EPFO documentation says the date of joining and date of exit should be available in the database.

Do not repeatedly submit different claims without first identifying why an earlier claim was rejected.

EPF vs EPS: Are They the Same Money?

No.

This is an important distinction that is frequently missed in PF withdrawal guides.

EPF relates to the provident fund accumulation.

EPS is the Employees' Pension Scheme and is governed by separate pension eligibility and withdrawal-benefit provisions.

For example, EPFO's claim guidance says that where a member has completed 10 years of eligible pensionable service, pension withdrawal benefit is generally not available in the same way as it is for someone below that service threshold; a Scheme Certificate or pension may become relevant depending on age and circumstances.

We will cover EPS separately in the upcoming EPFO Pension Rules 2026 guide.

Should You Withdraw the Maximum PF Amount Available?

Being eligible to withdraw money does not necessarily mean withdrawing the maximum amount is financially preferable.

EPF is fundamentally designed as retirement savings.

The government's decision to retain a 25% minimum balance under the revised partial-withdrawal framework was specifically presented as a measure to protect members' retirement corpus and allow them to continue benefiting from compound interest.

Members should therefore distinguish between an immediate financial need and discretionary spending before using long-term retirement savings.

EPF Withdrawal Rules 2026: Key Takeaways

The revised EPFO withdrawal framework is designed to make partial withdrawals simpler and more flexible.

The most important changes include:

Three simplified categories — Essential Needs, Housing Needs and Special Circumstances.

12-month minimum service requirement for partial withdrawals.

Up to 75% of the eligible amount accessible under the revised partial-withdrawal framework while preserving a 25% minimum balance.

Education withdrawals up to 10 times.

Marriage withdrawals up to five times.

For unemployment, the Ministry says 75% of the PF balance can be withdrawn immediately, with the remaining 25% available after one year.

However, members should distinguish between partial withdrawal, unemployment withdrawal and final settlement, because they are governed by different conditions.

Sources & Methodology

Updated+ reviewed information published by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, Ministry of Labour & Employment and Press Information Bureau, including official material explaining the revised partial-withdrawal framework.

Where current EPFO public-facing FAQ pages continue to show older provisions that differ from the newer reform framework, this article identifies that discrepancy rather than presenting the two sets of information as if they were identical.

Rules can be updated through notifications and EPFO system changes. Members making a financial decision should therefore verify their current eligibility through official EPFO services before submitting a withdrawal request.
