The United States has imposed a 10% tariff on goods from India as part of a new trade action covering 60 economies over the enforcement of restrictions on imports linked to forced labour. The tariffs took effect on July 24 under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, according to the White House.

Donald Trump administration imposes 10% US tariff on India over forced labour import enforcement

News Alert

The US tariff on India took effect on July 24, 2026, as part of Washington’s broader Section 301 trade action covering 60 economies. India has been placed in the 10% tariff category after introducing restrictions on imports of goods linked to forced labour.

The White House directed the US Trade Representative to impose new tariffs after investigations into whether 60 economies adequately prohibit and enforce restrictions on imports of goods produced wholly or partly with forced labour.

The investigations were launched on March 12, 2026. The US Trade Representative determined on June 2 that the policies and practices of the economies under investigation were actionable under Section 301 of the Trade Act.

Following public comments and hearings held on July 7, 8 and 9, the Trump administration approved tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5%.

India is among 17 economies facing the 10% tariff rate.

The other countries in this group include Argentina, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Jordan, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Trinidad and Tobago and the United Kingdom.

The White House said India, Cambodia, Guatemala, Honduras, Sri Lanka and Trinidad and Tobago had imposed forced-labour import prohibitions following consultations and the publication of the US Trade Representative's earlier findings.

As a result, Washington placed these economies in the 10% tariff category rather than the higher 12.5% group.

For most other economies covered by the investigation, including China, the administration imposed a 12.5% rate. Special arrangements apply to the European Union, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and Switzerland, where existing most-favoured-nation duties are taken into account.

Latest Developments

The new tariffs took effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on July 24, according to Reuters, as the Trump administration's temporary 10% global tariff expired.

Goods already in transit have been given temporary treatment until July 28.

The measures cover most US imports from the affected economies, although the administration has provided exemptions for several categories of products.

These include certain oil and gas products, fertiliser, food products, aircraft and parts, critical minerals and goods already covered by some US national-security tariffs.

Official Statements

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the United States had enforced restrictions on forced-labour imports for decades and argued that its trading partners should strengthen similar enforcement.

The White House said the tariffs were intended to encourage the affected economies to establish or effectively enforce prohibitions on imports involving forced labour.

The action follows investigations carried out under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, rather than the emergency-powers mechanism used for some earlier Trump tariffs.

Why This Matters for India

The US Trade Representative can modify or terminate tariffs and exemptions under the framework outlined by the White House.

Washington also plans tariff-rate quotas for certain textile and apparel imports from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia and Malaysia. The White House said implementation of those quotas is expected to become feasible by September 1.

Further developments will depend on US trade decisions and discussions with the affected trading partners.
