Police verification remains an important part of India's passport issuance system, particularly for applicants seeking a fresh passport.
But submitting a passport application does not automatically mean every applicant goes through exactly the same police-verification process.
Depending on the type of application and the applicant's circumstances, the Passport Office can decide that verification should take place before passport issuance, after passport issuance, or that police verification is not required in an eligible case. Passport Seva says that in most cases involving fresh passports, pre-police verification is required.
For applicants, understanding these differences can make the Passport Police Verification 2026 process considerably easier.

What is passport police verification?
Passport Seva says police verification is used to ascertain the details furnished by an applicant and help ensure that a passport, an important identity and travel document, does not go into the wrong hands.
The process is linked to the information supplied in the passport application, particularly the applicant's identity and residential details.
The Passport Office ultimately determines whether police verification is required and which verification mode applies.
What are Pre-PV, Post-PV and No-PV?
Pre-Police Verification
Under Pre-PV, police verification takes place before the passport is issued.
Passport Seva says this is the default police verification mode and is required in most fresh-passport cases. Where Pre-PV applies, the passport is processed for dispatch after the Passport Office receives the required clear Police Verification Report.
Post-Police Verification
Under Post-PV, the passport can be issued first and police verification takes place afterwards.
Passport Seva's current guidance says that for eligible normal applications under Post-PV, passport dispatch is expected on the third working day, excluding the date of application submission, without waiting for the Police Verification Report.
No Police Verification
Certain eligible applications may be processed without police verification.
Whether an applicant qualifies depends on the application type, documents supplied and other conditions prescribed by Passport Seva.
Pre-PV vs Post-PV vs No-PV
Is police verification required for a fresh passport?
In most cases, yes.
Passport Seva's application instructions state that most fresh passport applications require pre-police verification.
There are, however, exceptions. These can include certain government servants submitting prescribed documentation and certain applications involving minors. The final decision on the police-verification mode rests with the Passport Office.
There is also an important route for some first-time normal passport applicants.
Passport Seva currently states that normal applications of first-time applicants furnishing Aadhaar, Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC), PAN Card and the prescribed Annexure-E affidavit can be processed on a Post-PV basis, subject to successful Aadhaar validation and other applicable verification requirements.
This can allow the passport to be processed without waiting for completion of the Police Verification Report.

What documents are required for passport police verification?
There is an important distinction here: Passport Seva does not prescribe one universal standalone “police verification document kit” applicable identically to every applicant.
Applicants should first ensure that the documents submitted with their passport application are correct and that the address and identity information supplied is accurate.
At the PSK or POPSK stage, Passport Seva requires applicants to submit self-attested photocopies of required documents and produce the originals for verification. The originals are returned after verification.
During police verification, applicants should keep their passport application information and relevant identity/address documents readily available and follow any document instructions communicated by the local verification authority.
Applicants should not rely on unofficial internet checklists as a substitute for the documents specified for their individual passport application.
Which address is checked during passport police verification?
Passport Seva provides an important clarification on this issue.
Applicants need to provide address proof for their present address, irrespective of how long they have lived there.
Passport Seva says separate address proof is not required for every other location where the applicant lived during the preceding year. However, applicants must provide the addresses of all places where they resided during the previous one year so that the required police verification can be carried out.
This means applicants who have recently moved should not conceal their previous residential address.

Does passport police verification require one year of address proof?
No, not in the way this is sometimes described online.
Passport Seva says address proof is required only for the applicant's present address, irrespective of the period of stay there.
The applicant must nevertheless furnish details of all residential addresses from the previous year for police verification purposes.
This distinction is useful for students, tenants, employees who have recently relocated and people who have moved between cities.
Is police verification required for passport renewal?
Not necessarily.
For passport reissue, the Passport Office determines whether police verification is necessary based on the application and the records available.
Passport Seva's instruction booklet states that in most reissue cases, police verification may either not be required or may take place on a post-verification basis. Exceptions can include cases such as reissue after a lost passport or a complete change of name.
Applicants therefore should not assume that every passport renewal will trigger the same verification process as a first-time passport.
Is police verification required for Tatkaal Passport?
This is another common source of confusion.
Passport Seva states that police verification is not conducted before issuance of the passport under the Tatkaal scheme. Where applicable, Tatkaal police verification takes place on a post-police-verification basis.
So:
Tatkaal does not necessarily mean “no police verification.”
It means an eligible Tatkaal passport can be issued without waiting for the Police Verification Report, subject to the applicable rules.

How long does passport police verification take in 2026?
There isn't a single guaranteed number of days that applies to every applicant because the timing of police verification itself can depend on the local police authority and individual case.
For ordinary passports, the Ministry of External Affairs Citizen's Charter gives an overall indicative timeline of up to 30 working days for fresh issue, excluding the police-verification period. Reissues can be processed faster where pre-police verification is not required.
The distinction matters: the Passport Office's processing period and the time taken for police verification should not always be treated as the same thing.
For Pre-PV, Passport Seva says the passport is expected to be dispatched within three working days after receipt of the Police Verification Report, excluding the date the PVR is received.
For eligible Post-PV applications, dispatch can occur on the third working day excluding the application-submission date without waiting for the PVR.

Applicants can track their passport application through the official Passport Seva Track Application Status facility.
The current tracking page asks applicants to select the application type and enter their File Number and Date of Birth.

Choose the application type.

Enter the applicant's date of birth.
Select Track Application Status.
The resulting status can indicate the current stage of processing.
Passport Seva also provides other status-access channels, including its mobile application and an SMS status facility.
What does an adverse police verification report mean?
An adverse Police Verification Report requires attention.
Passport Seva advises applicants whose file status shows an adverse police report to contact the concerned Passport Office to understand the reason.
After clarification, re-verification may be requested if required. Passport Seva says the Passport Office needs a clear police report from the re-verification before the passport can be issued in such cases.
Applicants should therefore avoid immediately submitting another passport application without first understanding why the existing verification became adverse.

What if passport police verification is pending for a long time?
If the police-verification stage appears to remain pending, applicants should first check the current application status through Passport Seva.
For substantially delayed cases, Passport Seva's police-verification FAQ advises applicants who have not received their passport to contact or visit the concerned Passport Office.
Avoid relying only on informal estimates of how many days police verification “normally” takes because processing can differ between cases and jurisdictions.
