Passport Fees 2026: New Charges for Fresh Passport, Renewal and Tatkaal Explained

Passport fees 2026 for fresh and Tatkaal Indian passport applications

Applying for or renewing an Indian passport became more expensive from July 1 after the government revised passport and related service fees.

Under the Passport Fees 2026 structure, a normal 36-page fresh or reissued passport for an adult now costs ₹2,500, while the corresponding Tatkaal fee is ₹5,000 in total. A 60-page passport costs ₹3,500 under the normal route and ₹6,000 under Tatkaal.

The revised rates were notified by the Ministry of External Affairs through the Passports (Amendment) Rules, 2026, issued on June 20 and effective from July 1.

The new schedule also changes fees for minors, replacement of lost or damaged passports, Police Clearance Certificates and other passport-related services.

Here is what applicants need to know.

Passport Fees 2026: What Changed From July 1?

The government replaced Schedule IV of the Passports Rules, 1980 with a revised fee schedule.

For applicants aged 18 and above — as well as applicants aged 15 to 18 who opt for the relevant full-validity category , a normal 36-page passport now costs ₹2,500.

The normal fee for a 60-page passport is ₹3,500.

Under Tatkaal, the corresponding total fees are ₹5,000 and ₹6,000 respectively.

Passport Fees 2026 at a Glance

How much does a fresh passport cost in 2026?

For an ordinary 36-page passport, an adult applicant pays ₹2,500 under the normal route.

A 60-page passport costs ₹3,500.

These categories generally carry validity of up to 10 years. The same basic fee categories also apply to reissue of an ordinary passport.

The 60-page booklet is primarily useful for people who travel frequently and expect to require more visa and immigration pages.

How much does a Tatkaal passport cost in 2026?

For a 36-page passport in the adult/full-validity category, the Gazette lists a total Tatkaal fee of ₹5,000.

For the 60-page version, the total is ₹6,000.

Passport Seva explains the same structure as the normal application fee plus an additional ₹2,500 Tatkaal fee for these categories.

So, for example:

36-page passport: ₹2,500 normal + ₹2,500 Tatkaal = ₹5,000

60-page passport: ₹3,500 normal + ₹2,500 Tatkaal = ₹6,000

Normal vs Tatkaal

What are the passport fees for minors in 2026?

Applicants below 18 years have a separate fee category.

For a normal fresh or reissued 36-page passport, the fee is ₹1,750.

Under Tatkaal, the total fee is ₹4,250.

For this category, passport validity is generally five years or until the applicant reaches 18 years of age, whichever is earlier.

There is another concession worth knowing.

The revised rules provide a 10% discount on passport fees for fresh applications from minors aged up to eight years and senior citizens above 60. The concession does not apply to reissue applications.

How much does it cost to replace a lost or damaged passport?

Replacing a lost or damaged passport is considerably more expensive than a standard reissue.

For applicants in the adult/full-validity category:

Service

Normal

Tatkaal

Lost/damaged passport – 36 pages

₹5,000

₹7,500

Lost/damaged passport – 60 pages

₹6,000

₹8,500

For a minor's 36-page passport replacing a lost or damaged passport, the normal fee is ₹4,250, while the Tatkaal total is ₹6,750.

Applicants should therefore select the correct reissue reason while completing the online application.

What is the Police Clearance Certificate fee in 2026?

The revised fee for a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is ₹750 in India.

The same ₹750 category in the Gazette covers a Surrender Certificate, Global Entry Program verification and other miscellaneous certificates based on the passport. Tatkaal is listed as not applicable to this category.

Fresh passport, renewal or reissue: which service should you choose?

Passport terminology can be confusing because what people commonly call a passport “renewal” is generally handled as a reissue.

A reissue may be required when an existing passport is expiring or has expired, when pages have been exhausted, when personal particulars need to change, or when the passport has been lost or damaged.

Which Passport Service Do You Need?

How do you apply for a passport online?

The basic Passport Seva process involves online registration, completing and submitting the application, paying the applicable fee, scheduling an appointment and visiting the designated Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra.

Online payment is mandatory for booking an appointment.

Passport Seva currently supports payment methods including credit/debit cards, eligible internet banking and UPI. Tatkaal applicants are required to pay the applicable fee while making the online payment.

Passport Application Journey

Is Tatkaal available to everyone?

Tatkaal is intended for applicants who require faster passport processing, but applicants still have to satisfy the applicable eligibility and documentation rules.

Passport Seva states that a Gazetted Officer's Verification Certificate, which was previously required under the Tatkaal scheme, is no longer necessary. Applicants should nevertheless check the current Tatkaal document requirements before applying.

Tatkaal appointments also operate under a separate appointment quota, and availability varies by Passport Office and PSK.

Are passport fees refundable?

No. Passport Seva states that the application fee is non-refundable.

Applicants should therefore verify the application category, booklet size, normal or Tatkaal route and other details before making payment.

36-page vs 60-page passport: which should you choose?

For most applicants, the standard 36-page passport is sufficient.

Frequent international travellers may prefer the 60-page booklet because it provides additional space for visas and immigration stamps.

Under the 2026 fee structure, however, choosing 60 pages costs ₹1,000 more:

36 pages — ₹2,500 normal

60 pages — ₹3,500 normal

The difference remains ₹1,000 under Tatkaal: ₹5,000 versus ₹6,000.

What passport applicants should do before paying

Applicants should use the official Passport Seva fee calculator to verify the exact fee applicable to their circumstances.

This is particularly important for minors, senior citizens, lost or damaged passports and other cases where the fee may differ from the standard adult fresh-passport rate.

Passport Seva itself currently displays a notice advising applicants that fees were revised from July 1, 2026 and that they should check the revised amount before payment.
