A Hindi devotional film made for roughly ₹2 crore, without a major Bollywood star, opened to just around ₹10 lakh at the Indian box office.

A month later, Hanuman Ansh had become one of the most extraordinary success stories of 2026.

Inspired by the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj-ji, the film grew largely through word of mouth. Bollywood Hungama currently reports an India box-office total of about ₹146.82 crore, while other trackers have reported somewhat different figures — an important distinction when assessing its remarkable theatrical run.

Now the small film is preparing for an even bigger journey: Hanuman Ansh is scheduled to release internationally on September 11, 2026, with Hombale Films handling its overseas distribution.

So how did a modest devotional drama about Neem Karoli Baba become one of the year's biggest box-office surprises?

What Is Hanuman Ansh About?

Written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, Hanuman Ansh explores the life, spiritual journey and teachings associated with Neem Karoli Baba.

The film places devotion, service, faith and humanity at the centre of its story rather than approaching Maharaj-ji simply as a historical personality.

Shobhinaw Satyaa portrays Neem Karoli Baba, while Purnima Tiwari plays his wife, Rambeti. The film also features Vihaan Shedge as the younger Neem Karoli Baba.

For audiences unfamiliar with Maharaj-ji, the film has also become an introduction to a spiritual figure whose influence eventually reached far beyond India.

From ₹10 Lakh Opening to a Box-Office Phenomenon

The most remarkable part of the Hanuman Ansh story may not be its subject. It is the way audiences discovered it.

Bollywood Hungama records an opening-day collection of only ₹10 lakh, followed by ₹23 lakh on Saturday and ₹31 lakh on Sunday. The first week ended at approximately ₹1.07 crore.

For many small films, numbers like these would signal the end of their theatrical run.

Instead, Hanuman Ansh accelerated.

Its third week ended at ₹12.66 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama. By the end of week four, its cumulative collection had surged to ₹74.81 crore. Its currently listed India total stands at around ₹146.82 crore.

Reports place the film's production budget at roughly ₹1.8–2 crore. That makes its theatrical performance extraordinary by any conventional return-on-investment measure

Why Did Hanuman Ansh Become So Successful?

There is no single explanation for the film's unusual trajectory.

But its numbers strongly suggest that word of mouth, rather than a massive opening driven by stars and marketing, played a major role.

The ₹10-lakh opening was followed by dramatic growth several weeks into its theatrical run — exactly the opposite of the front-loaded pattern commonly seen with major commercial releases.

The subject also matters.

Neem Karoli Baba has a large devotional following in India, while his international reputation has been strengthened by the stories connecting him and Kainchi Dham with figures including Ram Dass, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.

That gives Hanuman Ansh an unusual combination: a deeply Indian devotional story with a recognisable international connection.

Shobhinaw Satyaa: From Assistant Director to Neem Karoli Baba

The story behind the film's lead actor is almost as unusual as its box-office run.

Shobhinaw Satyaa was initially working as an assistant director on the project.

According to accounts from the production, difficulties surrounding the original casting eventually resulted in Satyaa taking on the role of Neem Karoli Baba himself. The project also faced significant financial and production challenges, with members of the crew reportedly leaving when they doubted whether filming would proceed.

Satyaa stayed.

The assistant director ultimately became the face of the film.

The performance has subsequently put an actor who was virtually unknown to mainstream audiences at the centre of one of 2026's most talked-about Hindi films.

A Devotional Approach Behind the Camera

The makers have also described an unusually spiritual atmosphere surrounding the production.

Director Vishal Chaturvedi reportedly followed a fruit-based diet for several months, recited the Hanuman Chalisa regularly and maintained vegetarian food on set. He has cited the landmark 1975 devotional film Jai Santoshi Maa as an inspiration.

These practices do not determine a film's historical accuracy, but they help explain the filmmakers' stated intention: Hanuman Ansh was conceived primarily as a devotional work rather than a conventional celebrity biopic.

How Much of Hanuman Ansh Is Historically Accurate?

This is where the film requires some context.

Neem Karoli Baba was a real Hindu spiritual teacher, widely known as Maharaj-ji, whose influence continues through devotees, temples and ashrams including Kainchi Dham in Uttarakhand.

But his life is also surrounded by numerous stories of miracles, extraordinary knowledge and supernatural experiences.

Many of these accounts come from devotees.

That means Hanuman Ansh operates in an area where biographical history, religious testimony and faith intersect.

Members of Neem Karoli Baba's extended family have recently spoken positively about the film and its portrayal of Maharaj-ji. But family endorsement of a portrayal is not the same as independent historical verification of every event depicted on screen.

The Steve Jobs Connection

The international fascination surrounding Neem Karoli Baba inevitably brings Steve Jobs into the story.

Jobs travelled to India in 1974, hoping to encounter Neem Karoli Baba, but Maharaj-ji had died in September 1973. Jobs therefore never personally met him.

Years later, Mark Zuckerberg said Jobs had advised him to visit a temple in India during a difficult period in Facebook's early history.

These stories helped turn Kainchi Dham into a name recognised far beyond India's spiritual community.

For Hanuman Ansh, that international awareness could now prove particularly important.

Hanuman Ansh Goes Global on September 11

The next chapter begins outside India.

Hombale Films associated with films including KGF, Kantara and Salaar — has come aboard to handle the international distribution of Hanuman Ansh.

The film is scheduled to reach overseas theatres on September 11, 2026.

That represents a remarkable transformation.

A film that began its Indian theatrical run with around ₹10 lakh on opening day will now be presented to an international audience with the support of one of India's best-known film banners.

A Small Film With a Much Bigger Story

Hanuman Ansh did not begin like a conventional blockbuster.

It had no superstar opening, no enormous production budget and no spectacular first-week collection.

Instead, audiences found it gradually.

Its theatrical trajectory from approximately ₹10 lakh on opening day to well above ₹100 crore — has turned it into an unusual case study in the power of word of mouth and India's continuing audience for faith-based cinema.

But its significance may extend beyond the numbers.

The film has introduced a new generation to Neem Karoli Baba, revived interest in the stories surrounding Maharaj-ji and demonstrated that a devotional film made on a modest scale can still find a mass theatrical audience.

On September 11, that experiment moves beyond India.

Whether international audiences respond in the same way remains to be seen.

But for a ₹2-crore film that started with a ₹10-lakh opening, reaching that stage is already an extraordinary journey.
