Google Maps Ask Maps AI features in India with Gemini

UpdatedPlus | Technology

Google is expanding its AI-powered Ask Maps experience in India with a new set of features designed to make Google Maps more conversational and personalised.

The latest update brings Hindi support, Personal Intelligence, conversation history and real-time public transport information to Ask Maps, extending Google's effort to integrate its Gemini AI models more deeply into everyday navigation and local discovery.

Google announced the India-focused changes on August 6. Ask Maps, which was introduced in India earlier this year, allows users to ask complex questions about destinations, routes and nearby places using natural language instead of relying only on conventional searches and filters.

What is Google Maps Ask Maps?

Ask Maps combines information available through Google Maps with Google's Gemini AI models to provide conversational answers about places and travel.

Instead of separately searching for a restaurant, checking its reviews, calculating travel time and then looking for parking, for example, users can ask a more detailed question describing what they need.

When Google launched Ask Maps in India in March 2026, it said the system could draw on information covering more than 300 million places, including reviews contributed by a global community of more than 500 million people.

The latest update expands what Indian users can do with the feature.

Google Maps Ask Maps India to supports Hindi in India

One of the most significant changes is the introduction of Hindi support.

Google says Ask Maps is beginning to roll out in Hindi, allowing users to interact with the service naturally while searching for places, planning routes or seeking local information.

The addition is particularly important in India, where navigation and local-search queries frequently involve a mixture of languages.

Users who prefer Hindi will no longer necessarily have to formulate their questions in English to take advantage of the conversational AI experience.

Personal Intelligence brings more personalised recommendations

Google is also introducing Personal Intelligence to Ask Maps.

With the user's permission, Ask Maps can connect with Gmail and take existing information—such as upcoming flights or restaurant reservations—into account when answering a question.

For example, a traveller could ask what they can do near their hotel before a flight. Ask Maps could use reservation information from Gmail to provide nearby recommendations and suggest when the traveller should leave for the airport.

Google says connecting Gmail is off by default, meaning users have to choose to enable the feature. Calendar integration is also planned.

What’s New in India?

Ask Maps can remember previous conversations

Ask Maps is also becoming more useful for longer planning sessions.

When the appropriate history settings are enabled, Google says the service can remember previous Ask Maps conversations. A user planning a trip, for example, can return later and ask Maps to recall activities it previously recommended rather than starting the search again.

This moves Maps closer to an ongoing AI travel assistant rather than a traditional one-query-at-a-time mapping service.

Live bus, metro and train information arrives in Ask Maps

Another important addition for Indian users is real-time public transport information.

Google is adding a transit widget inside Ask Maps that can display current schedules and delays for buses, metros and trains.

Google gives the example of ISBT Kashmere Gate in Delhi. A user asking about upcoming services can receive departure information covering inter-city buses, local buses and metro connections. If a service is delayed, the displayed waiting time can adjust accordingly.

For commuters, this could make Ask Maps particularly useful because route planning and live transit information can increasingly happen within the same conversational interface.

Ask Maps also provides real-time local information

The AI experience isn't limited to navigation.

Users can ask about traffic conditions, weather or how busy a shop or restaurant is before travelling there. Google says Ask Maps uses current Maps information to help answer these types of real-world questions.

That makes the feature potentially useful for decisions such as choosing when to leave, selecting between transport options or avoiding a crowded destination.

How Ask Maps Works

Google is turning Maps into an AI assistant

The significance of the update goes beyond adding another set of Google Maps features.

Traditional mapping applications largely required users to tell the software exactly what to search for. Generative AI allows a user to describe an objective instead.

Someone could potentially ask for a suitable place based on several requirements rather than searching individually for each characteristic.

Google is simultaneously expanding Ask Maps internationally. Its broader August update includes agentic capabilities such as food ordering, hotel discovery and event information, although Google says some of those capabilities are initially rolling out in the United States rather than India.

What the Google Maps AI update means for users in India

For Indian users, the most immediate change could be the combination of Hindi interaction and real-time public transport information.

The ability to ask complex questions conversationally could reduce the number of separate searches required when planning a journey, while live transit information makes the feature more relevant to everyday commuters.

Personal Intelligence represents a larger shift. With permission, Maps can use contextual information from other Google services to generate recommendations around a person's existing plans.

That also means users should pay attention to their privacy and account settings before enabling connected features. Google says the Gmail connection is optional and disabled by default.

When will the new Ask Maps features be available?

Google says Hindi support began rolling out in India on August 6.

Personal Intelligence, conversation memory and live transit capabilities are also part of the latest Ask Maps expansion, although feature availability can vary as the rollout progresses.

Users should therefore keep Google Maps updated on Android or iOS and check whether Ask Maps and the new options have appeared on their device.
