India's basmati rice exports have come under significant pressure as ongoing tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt trade flows across the region. According to recent commerce data, exports of basmati rice declined by nearly 25% during March and April compared to the same period last year. The slowdown has been largely driven by weaker shipments to major Gulf markets, which account for a substantial share of India's premium rice exports.

West Asia Crisis Impacts Basmati Rice Exports
The Gulf region remains one of the largest buyers of Indian basmati rice. Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, the UAE and Yemen together account for nearly half of India's total basmati exports. However, trade disruptions linked to the regional crisis have reduced shipments to several of these markets. Official figures show cumulative exports during March and April fell to about $838 million from over $1.1 billion a year earlier.
Industry estimates suggest India exports nearly 60 lakh tonnes of basmati rice annually, with around 40 lakh tonnes destined for Gulf nations. Exporters have reported steep declines ranging from 50% to 90% in some key markets.
New Markets Offer Support for Basmati Rice Exports
Despite challenges in West Asia, exporters are exploring alternative markets. Shipments to countries including the United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands have increased, while exports to China have also shown strong growth. Trade data indicates that basmati exports to China rose sharply in recent months as Indian exporters sought new opportunities.
Impact on Farmers and Rice-Producing States
A prolonged decline in basmati rice exports could affect farmers in major rice-producing states such as Punjab and Haryana, which contribute a large share of India's rice output. Industry experts warn that continued disruptions may impact farm incomes, export earnings and overall agricultural trade.
The situation remains closely monitored as exporters look for new destinations and more stable shipping routes to sustain India's position in the global basmati rice market.
