Aadhaar Card New Rules 2026: What Has Changed, What Hasn’t and Common Myths Explained

Aadhaar card new rules 2026 and UIDAI digital services in India

Aadhaar services have undergone several digital changes in 2026, but some widely circulated claims about a completely redesigned Aadhaar card have also created confusion.

The Aadhaar card new rules 2026 include expanded digital services through the Aadhaar App, changes to some update facilities and fee concessions. At the same time, the government has rejected reports that the existing Aadhaar card is being replaced with a mandatory new format showing only a photograph and QR code.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology clarified on May 3 that there was no plan for such a change, after reports and social-media posts claimed Aadhaar would be redesigned to show only a photograph and QR code.

So what has actually changed, what remains the same, and which Aadhaar claims should users ignore?

Aadhaar Card New Rules 2026: What Has Actually Changed?

The most significant developments in 2026 are centred around digital Aadhaar services rather than mandatory replacement of the physical Aadhaar card.

UIDAI's new Aadhaar App allows Aadhaar holders to access digital identity services from their smartphones. According to UIDAI, users can currently update their mobile number and address directly through the app without visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

UIDAI has also extended free online document updates through the myAadhaar portal until June 14, 2027. Updating supporting documents at an Aadhaar centre costs ₹75.

Another temporary concession applies to email-address updates through the Aadhaar mobile application: UIDAI says the charge is waived until December 31, 2026.

Aadhaar 2026: Fact vs Myth

Is Aadhaar getting a new design with only a photo and QR code?

No such mandatory redesign has been announced.

Earlier reports had suggested that UIDAI was considering a privacy-focused Aadhaar format containing primarily a photograph and secure QR code. That discussion subsequently led to reports suggesting the change was imminent.

On May 3, however, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology publicly rejected reports that Aadhaar's appearance would change by the end of 2026 to show only a photograph and QR code. It advised people to rely on official UIDAI communications and PIB releases rather than social-media claims.

This distinction is important: a concept or proposal being discussed is not the same as a notified rule.

Users do not need to replace their existing Aadhaar because of these reports.

Which forms of Aadhaar are valid in 2026?

UIDAI currently recognises multiple forms of Aadhaar.

These include:

Aadhaar LetterAadhaar PVC Carde-AadhaarAadhaar App

UIDAI explicitly states that all forms of Aadhaar are equally valid and acceptable.

That means buying a PVC Aadhaar card does not make someone's Aadhaar more legally valid than an e-Aadhaar.

Which Aadhaar Is Valid?

Is e-Aadhaar as valid as a physical Aadhaar card?

Yes.

UIDAI says the electronic version has the same validity as the Aadhaar letter and PVC card.

This is useful for people who have lost their physical document or need immediate access to Aadhaar.

Users should download Aadhaar only through official UIDAI services rather than third-party websites.

Is Aadhaar PVC Card mandatory?

No.

The PVC version is an optional physical format, not a compulsory replacement for other forms of Aadhaar.

UIDAI currently charges ₹75, inclusive of GST and Speed Post charges, for ordering an Aadhaar PVC Card. The card includes security features such as a tamper-proof QR code, microtext, ghost image, guilloche pattern and embossed Aadhaar logo.

A person who already has a valid Aadhaar Letter or e-Aadhaar therefore does not have to buy a PVC card simply for validity.

What is new in the Aadhaar App?

The Aadhaar App represents one of the more substantive changes to Aadhaar services in 2026.

Registration requires Aadhaar details, SIM selection and face authentication, after which the user creates a six-digit PIN for access.

Most importantly, UIDAI says users can currently update mobile number and address directly through the Aadhaar App without visiting an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

This is a significant change because mobile-number updates traditionally required a physical visit.

The app's adoption has also been rapid. UIDAI reported in July that the new Aadhaar App had crossed 40 million downloads.

Can you update every Aadhaar detail online?

No.

The availability of a digital update option depends on the type of information being changed and the service being used.

The new Aadhaar App currently supports direct updates of mobile number and address, according to UIDAI.

Other changes may require different processes or a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.

For example, UIDAI's current guidance says certain name corrections require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. It also applies limits to some demographic changes: name can generally be updated twice during a lifetime, while gender and date of birth are generally limited to one update each, subject to UIDAI rules and exception processes.

Users should therefore check the current UIDAI procedure for the specific field they want to change.

Is Aadhaar document update free in 2026?

Online document update currently has a temporary fee concession.

UIDAI says Aadhaar holders can submit Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents through the myAadhaar portal without a fee until June 14, 2027.

Submitting the documents at an Aadhaar centre currently attracts a charge of ₹75.

UIDAI recommends that Aadhaar holders keep their identity and address documents current, including updating supporting documents at least once in 10 years from Aadhaar generation.

Importantly, this recommendation should not be misrepresented as meaning an Aadhaar number automatically expires after 10 years.

UIDAI says an Aadhaar number is unique to an individual and remains valid for life.

Is email update free through the Aadhaar App?

For now, yes.

UIDAI has waived the charge for updating an email address through the Aadhaar mobile application until December 31, 2026.

Because this is a time-limited concession, users checking this article after that date should verify the latest fee on UIDAI's official website.

What does the QR code on Aadhaar actually do?

The QR code is already an important security and verification feature of Aadhaar.

UIDAI says its Secure QR Code is digitally signed and can be used for offline identity verification. It appears on Aadhaar formats including e-Aadhaar, Aadhaar Letter and Aadhaar PVC Card.

The QR code contains verified demographic information, a photograph and masked contact information. It can be read using UIDAI-authorised tools such as the Aadhaar App or Aadhaar QR Scanner.

So QR-based verification itself is not a new 2026 concept, even though the new Aadhaar App is expanding how digital credentials can be shared and verified.

Does Aadhaar expire after 10 years?

No.

This is another important distinction.

UIDAI recommends periodically updating supporting Proof of Identity and Proof of Address documents, particularly when they have not been updated for many years.

But the Aadhaar number itself does not have a standard 10-year expiry date. UIDAI states that an Aadhaar number remains valid for life.

“Update your documents after 10 years” and “your Aadhaar expires after 10 years” are therefore not the same statement.

Aadhaar 2026: what is fact and what is misinformation?

The easiest way to understand the current position is to separate actual UIDAI services from viral claims.

Claim: Everyone must get a new Aadhaar card in 2026.Verdict: False. No such mandatory replacement has been announced.

Claim: Aadhaar will definitely become a photo-and-QR-only card by the end of 2026.Verdict: False as a current rule. The government explicitly rejected reports of such a planned change in May.

Claim: PVC Aadhaar is mandatory.Verdict: False. UIDAI recognises multiple equally valid Aadhaar formats.

Claim: e-Aadhaar is valid.Verdict: True.

Claim: Mobile number can now be updated using the Aadhaar App.Verdict: True under UIDAI's current app services.

Claim: Aadhaar expires after 10 years.Verdict: False. UIDAI recommends updating supporting documents, but the Aadhaar number remains valid for life.

What Aadhaar users should do in 2026

There is no need to rush to replace an existing Aadhaar simply because of claims circulating online about a “new Aadhaar card”.

Instead, Aadhaar holders should ensure that their registered information is accurate, keep their supporting identity and address documents current, and use official UIDAI services for updates.

The expanding Aadhaar App ecosystem means more services are moving to smartphones, including mobile-number and address updates. But that digital transition should not be confused with claims that all existing Aadhaar cards have suddenly become invalid.

For any major Aadhaar rule change, the safest approach remains simple: look for a notification or clarification from UIDAI or the Government of India before taking action or paying anyone.

Updated+ reviewed current UIDAI FAQs and service pages covering Aadhaar formats, PVC cards, QR verification, the Aadhaar App, online updates and document-update rules, along with the government's May 2026 clarification concerning reports of a QR-only Aadhaar redesign. Because Aadhaar fees and digital services can change, time-limited concessions in this article are identified with their applicable dates.
