Netflix has launched a multi-phase talent development programme in India covering animation, visual effects, gaming, comics and virtual production, alongside new partnerships with IICT and NFDC.
Netflix has announced the Netflix India Storytelling Initiative, a multi-phase programme designed to develop India’s next generation of creators and strengthen the country’s entertainment-production workforce.
The streaming company will partner with the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT) and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) during the initiative’s first phase. Netflix will also support 100 scholarships for Indian students enrolled in selected in-person programmes at IICT.
The announcement came after Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos met Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss the international reach of Indian stories and the company’s longer-term role in India’s creative economy.
Netflix India Storytelling Initiative focuses on creative skills
The programme will concentrate on industry-relevant skills across the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics, or AVGC, ecosystem.
Netflix said the initiative would build partnerships with Indian institutions and develop pathways for emerging creators. Its focus extends beyond conventional film and television production to areas such as interactive comics, virtual production, character animation and gaming management.
According to the company, Netflix has produced more than 200 originals and filmed at over 100 locations in India during its first decade of operating in the country.
As Netflix enters its second decade in India, the new programme indicates a broader investment in the people and technical capabilities behind screen entertainment, not only in individual films and series.

Netflix to offer 100 scholarships at IICT
Under its partnership with IICT, Netflix will help develop industry-oriented curricula in two areas:
Visual Effects Mastery
Media Technology Workflows
The curricula are intended to help students acquire skills aligned with changing production technologies and professional requirements.
Netflix will also provide 100 scholarships to Indian students for in-person IICT programmes. The eligible disciplines mentioned by the company include:
Interactive Comics and Sequential Art
Virtual Art Department Content Creation
Art of Character Animation
E-Sports and Gaming Management
Other emerging creative disciplines
The company has not yet disclosed detailed information about scholarship eligibility, application dates, selection procedures or the extent of financial support. Interested students should wait for application instructions from Netflix or IICT and avoid relying on unofficial registration links.
Partnership with NFDC to support accessible entertainment
The second major component of the initiative is Netflix’s partnership with NFDC.
The two organisations plan to develop a talent pipeline for specialised roles connected with accessible film and television content. This will include training for audio-description writers and voice-over artists.
Audio description uses narration to communicate important visual details for viewers who are blind or have low vision. Trained writers and voice professionals are needed to describe actions, settings, expressions and other visual elements without interfering with dialogue or sound.
Netflix said the training programme would combine international audio-description standards with India’s languages and local storytelling traditions.
The initiative could generate opportunities in a specialised area of post-production as accessibility requirements become increasingly important across streaming, cinema and television.
Why the initiative matters for India’s entertainment business
India has a large pool of artists, animators, editors, designers and other creative professionals. However, the availability of talent alone does not ensure that students are prepared for rapidly changing studio workflows.
Virtual production, real-time visual effects, game engines and advanced post-production technologies are transforming the way films, series and interactive entertainment are created. Academic programmes must therefore maintain closer links with current industry practices.
Netflix’s partnership with IICT attempts to narrow this gap by connecting education with professional production requirements. The NFDC collaboration addresses another gap: the availability of trained professionals who can make entertainment accessible to a wider audience.
Together, the partnerships bring education, production technology and accessibility within the same talent-development strategy.
What is India’s Orange Economy?
Netflix described the AVGC sector as an important part of India’s Orange Economy.
The term refers to economic activity built around creativity, culture and intellectual property. It includes film, television, animation, music, design, gaming, publishing, digital media and other creative industries.
These industries generate revenue not only from domestic audiences but also through exports, licensing, production services and globally distributed intellectual property.
Developing specialised creative skills could help India move beyond functioning mainly as a production-services destination and create more original entertainment properties for international markets.
Netflix says investment in creators is a long-term priority
Sarandos said Indian stories have connected with audiences both within the country and internationally over the past decade.
“As we begin our next decade here, we believe our greatest investment is in the people who will tell India’s next generation of stories,” he said in the company’s announcement.
Netflix said the initiative supports the development of a future-ready creative workforce and is aligned with India’s broader ambition to become a global centre for entertainment production and creative innovation.
The long-term impact will depend on how the scholarships are awarded, how many students receive employment opportunities after training and whether the planned curricula remain connected with real production requirements.
For students and young professionals, however, the initiative opens new pathways into specialised careers that have traditionally received less attention than acting, direction or mainstream film production.
